Who we are
Play Locals is a platform that connects local tennis players so they can arrange games, rallies and matches with people nearby. We take your privacy seriously and only collect what we need to make the service work.

What data we collect
When you create an account we collect:
- Your name and email address
- Your date of birth (to verify you are old enough to use the service)
- Your mobile number (used so players can arrange games directly)
- Your city or local area
- Your sport preferences (e.g. tennis)
- Your player profile - including your level, bio, availability and profile photo
- Your marketing email preference (opted in or out)
When you use the platform we also store:
- Hit requests you send or receive
- In-app notifications related to your activity
We never store your password in plain text - it is hashed using industry-standard encryption before being saved.
Why we collect it
We collect this data to:
- Create and manage your account
- Show your profile to other players in your area
- Enable you to send and receive game requests
- Send you notifications about activity on your account
- Send password reset emails if requested
- Send marketing updates if you have opted in
Our legal basis for processing your data is the performance of our service (the contract between you and Play Locals), with your consent for any marketing communications.
Marketing emails
During sign up you can choose whether to receive marketing emails from Play Locals. These may include news, updates and information about the platform.
You can change your preference at any time from your account settings, or by clicking the unsubscribe link in any marketing email we send you.
We will never sell your email address or personal data to third parties, and we will only contact you with marketing if you have explicitly opted in.
How long we keep your data
We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. If you ask us to delete your account we will remove your personal data within 30 days.
Some data may be retained in anonymised or aggregated form for analytical purposes.
Who we share data with
We do not sell your data. We use the following third parties to run the service:
- Hostinger - our hosting and database provider, based in the EU
These providers are only given access to what they need to provide their service, and are contractually bound to protect your data.
Cookies and local storage
Play Locals uses your browser's local storage to keep you logged in between sessions - this is essential and doesn't require consent. We also use Google Tag Manager to understand how the app is used, but this only loads if you accept via the cookie banner shown on your first visit. You can change your mind at any time by managing your cookie preferences.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Request that we correct inaccurate data
- Request that we delete your data
- Object to or restrict how we process your data
- Withdraw consent for marketing at any time
To exercise any of these rights, please contact us and we will respond within 30 days.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make significant changes we will notify you by email or with a notice on the platform.
